The 2019 Riesling Brand Grand Cru is from a lieu-dit called Schnackelsburg on sand and granite soils. It has more topsoil, which avoids water stress. Lifted notions of dried lemon peel with an edge of chamomile define the nose with a subtle stoniness. The palate is stony, slightly salty and underscored by dried lemon peel brightness with much concentration and serene acidity. The finish almost tastes like wet rock and has a lovely apple flesh flavor. (Dry)(AK)

A rich and fleshy dry riesling that is less full-bodied than its 14% alcohol might suggest. Plenty of caramelized pineapple, but that description might make this sound heavy, whereas this is actually light on its feet with a certain elegance at the long, textural and mineral finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Harmonious and supple, its rich, full-bodied style combines peach and spice notes with a moderately firm structure. It turns more mineral on the finish, with a crunchy feel and a lingering aftertaste of peach and vanilla. (AZ)

The 2019 Charles Baur Riesling Grand Cru Brand is a striking expression of Alsace terroir—focused, vibrant, and quietly confident. It opens with lifted aromas of lime blossom, passion fruit, and flinty minerality, along with a subtle touch of petrol that hints at early development. On the palate, it’s zesty and mouthwatering, layered with citrus peel, juicy stone fruit, and crushed rock. A savory thread runs beneath the fruit, bringing depth and character without overpowering. As it opens in the glass, more floral and herbal notes emerge, giving the wine even more nuance. It finishes long and clean, with a lasting impression of wet stone, lemon oil, and alpine herbs. A classic Grand Cru Riesling that’s both expressive and restrained in all the right ways

Enthralling nose with a long line of petrol running through the whole nose, wrapped around gorgeous aromatic fruits. There's a lot of fleshy white peach, white plum, and a little salty lemon. The palate has gorgeous depth without fleshing out too wide, feeling very much like quickly walking down a curved staircase. There's a great line of acidity running through the whole palate and just a touch of nuttiness on the finish. There are times where it's more clear than others that you're tasting the the quality of the grapes and the age of the vineyard almost more than the winemaking, and this is one of those for me. Really delicious, and a crazy good wine for the price.

Notes

94pts Ian d'Agata, Terroir Sense: "Deep straw yellow with some green. Big and spicy on the nose, offering aromas of ripe apple, pear, apricot, stone and balsamic herbs. Then very good laser-like freshness, with spicy cut lifting the ripe orchard fruit flavours but the long finish is risingly broad and ample in the Brand sort of way. These 47 years old vines are in the Shinkenberg/Schneckelsbourg, a very atypical part of the Brand (characterized by limestone below and sand and only very little granite above). Very good, but it is a very different expression of Brand in which the combination of sand and a little granite allows for a wine that is at once vertical, broad and spicy-saline. Drinking window: 2024-2035." (10/2023)
