Reviewed October 2023The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Clos Du Roi Blanc is a juicy, up-front, delicious white with lots of ripe melon and peach fruit, some honeyed, floral, spicy nuances, medium body, a good sense of freshness, and outstanding length. It's beautifully done.

We never get a lot of Chateauneuf Blanc (it makes up less than 10% of the appellations production), so when we do, I love to talk about it. The 2022 "Clos du Roi" Blanc is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. It is such a delight, brimming with stone fruit flavors of nectarine and peach. There is a toasty creaminess here that is the hallmark of great drinking Chateauneuf Blanc. Drink young or for good to hold for a decade for something really interesting!

Another great CNP in our (of late) parade of wines from this village. This time, it's a very rare white version. Surprisingly tart, with bright acidity and almond/hazelnut nuttiness. Orchard and stone fruits. A lingering finish with beautiful acidity.
Notes
The estate at Château Gigognan has a history stretching back to Roman times, eventually becoming the property of the bishops of Avignon. More recently, the estate was acquired by Anne and Jacques Callet, who over the last few decades completely rebuilt the winery, restoring the château and replanting where necessary. Slowly they acquired additional parcels, and now the domaine includes 30 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, In 2012, consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie helped out, and in 2017 the property was bought by Jean-Francois Henin, with famed winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt was brought in to consult.
