The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru, which only yielded half a barrel last year, has a fabulous nose with intense black cherries, raspberry and crushed violet scents bursting from the glass. The medium-bodied palate offers succulent ripe tannins and a wonderful symmetry with a pixelated mineral-driven finish. This is an outstanding Vosne-Romanée. (NM)

Charles Van Canneyt qualifies his Malconsorts as his favourite wine at the domaine. It makes a triumphant return after being declassified in the difficult 2021 vintage. This year, the wine shows a bright, forward black cherry fruit with hints of lavender and spice. There is a marvellous depth of flavour, and the wine is rich and round without being imposing – it is a wine of great elegance. The grapes come from his 0.14-hectare parcel in the slightly sandy soils of the upper part of the vineyard, just south of Cathiard. Only bottled in magnum. (CC)

These vines sit upslope in Malconsorts and produce a slightly fresher style that is still simultaneously powerful. Kirsch, grenadine, brown spice and toast blend on the palate. Whole bunch freshness marks the wine as much as the supporting acidity. The sinewy tannins provide good grip and need some time to settle in.

Available in magnums only. An even mid crimson purple. Quite an intensity of fruit here. In the dark raspberry style, very complete, fills the palate, balanced tannins and acidity, and very persistent. All that it should be. The most powerful of the Vosne-Romanée 1ers Crus on show here. Drink from 2032-2040.
