Shimmering ruby. Suggestions of licorice and garrigue complement deeply pitched red and dark berry scents. Sappy and energetic on the palate, offering fresh black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors, along with smoky mineral and exotic spice flourishes. Shows sharp clarity on the smoky, clinging finish, which features supple tannins and resonating floral and spice notes. (JR)

The classic 2021 Gigondas Tradition is cut from the same cloth, with a classy, incredibly Provençal perfume of sweet raspberry and strawberry fruit as well as peppery herbs, pepper, and some minerality. It's a touch more masculine and firm on the palate, with medium-bodied richness, yet it's complex, has terrific balance, and a great finish. A blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged in old tanks and concrete, it's well worth buying and drinking any time over the coming 7-8 years or so.

Jean Baptiste Meunier's Gardette Gigondas is always one of my most transportive wines. Every vintage, every bottle, every glass, takes me to one of my favorite places to visit in the south of France - Gigondas. The wine always shows beautiful red and black fruit tones with notes of garrigue and tobacco. Garrigue is the forest that surrounds the vineyards and it perfumes the grapes with its natural oils from the diverse plants that grow there. This is where those notes of wild thyme, bay leaf, fennel and lavender find their way into the glass. It's like a beautiful hiking adventure with every sip as you journey through the forests and vineyards in this peaceful quaint village. The 2021 is an exceptionally well-balanced version showing elegance and approachability. Few wines take me somewhere as much as Gardette's Traditional Gigondas. Are you ready for such a journey?

Such a lovely wine from Gigondas. Fresh fruit, lively acidity, and a medium body make this a perfect food wine. So versatile for pairing! The wine is also full of umami and olive with some minerality. This is an elegant wine perfect for so many meals or by itself!

Notes

Jean-Baptiste Meunier is the fifth generation winemaker behind the great property of Moulin de la Gardette in the Southern Rhône region of Gigondas. We have been working with him since the mid-'90s and the wines have always been some of our favorites from the area. The region itself has stepped out of the shadow of neighboring Châteauneuf-du-Pape, creating wines of intensity and flavor that are distinctly their own. Gigondas has more south facing slopes and higher elevations as well as varied soils that help distinguish the region. The "Tradition" is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah from vines averaging in age of 50-60 years. It is aged for about 18 months in mostly used foudre and demi-muid before bottling.
