The 2017 Montefalco Rosso Riserva Pipparello bursts from the glass with smoky grilled herbs, shaved cedar, dried cherries, currants, hints of spiced citrus… the list goes on and on. It washes across the palate with soft, fleshy textures and masses of balsamic-tinged dark red fruits, yet at the core, stimulating acidity creates a wildly energetic expression. This finishes remarkably long and potent, already providing pleasure through its primary components. The 2017 has a long story to tell, as grippy tannins slowly resolve under an air of rosy inner florals. This is Pipparello on steroids. (EG)

A blend of 60% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 25% Montepulciano, the Paolo Bea 2017 Montefalco Rosso Riserva Pipparello is full-bodied but elegant, with natural ripeness and black fruit flavors that are characteristic of this hot and dry vintage. There are lingering hints of sweetness as well in this wine that sees 42 days of skin contact during fermentation and a prolonged 22 months in large oak casks. Bea's hands-off winemaking style means that his releases are always marked by the character of the vintage. He describes this wine as "ruffiano," which in Italian somewhat translates as "ready-to-please." (ML)

Pipparello takes its name from Bea’s hilltop vineyard in Montefalco, where clay and gravel soils lie at roughly 1,300 feet. For 2017, Wine Advocate records a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano and 15% Sagrantino. Vinous describes a generous, fleshy palate whose dark fruit is animated by persistent acidity. Herbal and floral detail emerge through the wine’s density, while a long finish retains firm tannic grip. Its richness is part of the character; the freshness and tannins give that breadth shape.
