Burghound
Reviewed June 2024Note: 25+ year old vines aged in 25% new wood. Pungent aromas of moderate reduction and wood toast render the nose tough to evaluate today. More interesting are the caressing yet intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine shaping the beautifully long finish. This needs better depth but that should just be a question of exercising some patience.*Burghound Outstanding!*

A surprising degree of green to the colour. A light but fine bouquet, all quite discreet, then rather more fruit intensity on the palate, quite linear but not without a little flesh on the bones. Apples washed with lime. Fine and elegant finish. Drink from 2027-2034.

Wine Advocate
Aromas of pear, green apple, mint and nutmeg introduce Sauzet's 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne, a medium to full-bodied, satiny wine with good depth at the core and an attractively mordant finish. It's a cuvée produced with purchased grapes from a parcel farmed and harvested by the Sauzet team.
Benoît Riffault is pleased with his 2022s, and with reason, as it numbers among his finest vintages to date. His harvest dates were more or less the same as in 2020, which is to say, relatively speaking, a little earlier, and that translates to impeccable balance across the board. But what are the rudiments of winemaking at this address today? Hand-harvested fruit is pressed without crushing, the press cycle lasting around three and a half hours and performing "quite a few," which is to say more than 20, rotations. The must is sulfited at the end of the press and settled for 24 hours, but Riffault retains most of the lees, fermenting in wood with ambient yeasts. Larger formats, including foudres, now complement 228-liter Burgundian barrels. The wines are racked to tank in July-August before the new vintage, whereas the premiers and grands crus spend as much as six months on their lees before bottling. All of Sauzet's wines are bottled with high-quality unbleached and unwaxed natural cork. (WK)

Vinous
The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru has distant scents of sea spray and estuarine notes on the nose, neatly combined with the green apples. The palate is well-balanced, with the 15% new oak judiciously used to lend a little more creaminess in texture towards the lightly spiced finish. It just needs more nerve and mineralité overall. (NM)
Notes
Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Direction Blagny with some depth of soil here.Finer, more mineral – less open but super. A more supple middle and the acidity is less overt vs the villages yet the juiciness seems more. A little oak padding here too but less than the villages – the finish equally long but more saline in style." (01/2024)
