Reviewed August 2023The 2019 Petresco picks up where the 2018 left off, although it is perhaps a bit more reserved at this stage than its older sibling was. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2019 possesses notable depth and intensity. Time in the glass brings out shades of red/purplish Sangiovese fruit mixed with suggestions of new leather, spice and menthol. The 2019 spent two years in wood (equal parts cask and barrique) followed by a year in cement. (AG)

This version Le Cinciole "Petresco" single vineyard Sangiovese leans towards a concentrated nose of dried wild strawberries, plums, prune and cranberry preserves. The color when at an angle in the glass shows a rustic burgundy brick hue that I find to be very attractive. There is an herbal element to this wine that is of dried rosemary, thyme combined with cloves and tea leaf. Very textural mouthfeel and grainy tannins leaves me want to decant this ahead of time and enjoy with some wild boar ragout or slow roasted leg of lamb packed with Italian herbs over a bead of farro.
Notes
Antonio Galloni for Vinous on the producer: "I was once again deeply impressed with Le Cinciole. Valeria Viganò and Luca Orsini have quietly turned Le Cinciole into one of the leading estates in all of Italy. Biodynamic farming and a minimalist aesthetic in the cellar inform wines of tremendous character and pedigree. Long aging seems especially well suited to these reds. Readers should do everything they can to check out these new releases." (06/2023)
