Reviewed December 2023
The nose is an astringent blend of dried cherries, cranberries, bricks, soil and hibiscus, with a mix of fresh wild herbs providing some warmth. The sanguine fruitiness and earthy notes continue onto the palate, but polished tannins and lithe acid create a round texture. (DC)

The Tenuta La Massa 2020 La Massa, with 100,000 bottles produced, offers great value across the board. This is a generous and deeply layered blend of 50% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, Alicante and Petit Verdot. The wine sees 12 months of barrique aging with 20% new oak. Vintner Giampaolo Motta breaks the rules by making Bordeaux-inspired wines in one of the most fervently Sangiovese-leaning spots in Tuscany. But he adds a little charm and magic to this wine nonetheless. (ML)

Ripe berries, citrus, preserved plums and some savory baking spices extend to a medium-bodied palate with fine, juicy tannins and a tight, focused finish. Drink now.

The 2020 La Massa is quite the powerhouse. A rush of black cherry, plum, licorice, incense, chocolate and dried herbs stains the palate. This flamboyant, dense wine is packed to the core. Give it a few years to soften. (AG)

Notes

Monica Larner's notes on the producer for Wine Advocate: "The big news from my favorite Bordeaux-inspired Neapolitan-turned-Tuscan vintner Giampaolo Motta is that his headline wine, Giorgio Primo, has joined the prestigious Place de Bordeaux (starting with the 2019 vintage that you can find in our database). In other news, two new vineyard parcels have been planted. The upper parcel at 450 meters in elevation with limestone soils has Cabernet Franc. The lower parcel located in the coolest part of the property across from a small seasonal stream is home to white grapes. This estate was previously listed under the name Fattoria La Massa, but the brand has been updated to Tenuta La Massa." (9/2023) 50% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, Alicante and Petit Verdot.
