The 2019 Las Gravas is a blend of 88% Monastrell from limestone gravel soils and 12% Garnacha also planted in the same gravel soils, but it's obviously much younger than the Monastrell and there's more Garnacha in this vintage marked by rains during the harvest. It fermented in underground pools fully destemmed with indigenous yeasts and matured in 5,000-liter oak foudres and 500-liter oak barrels for 14 months. This is expressive but subtle, faintly balsamic, with good ripeness (14.5%) alcohol, fully developed flavors and hints of Mediterranean herbs, with more pine needles in this north-facing exposition and grainy tannins. In 2019 they played up more of the varietal profile, and it shows in the wine. It has fine-grained, chalky tannins and a long, dry finish. (LG)

Earth, truffle, moss, pine… and delicate black fruit underneath those more earthy characters. A wine with a certain rusticity, but fluid. A lot of depth despite being a slightly lighter vintage than usual. Oak is a travelling companion, but not the protagonist. Fabulous on the palate. Delicate Monastrell and one of the best in its area. 17.5/20 points (FC)

Notes

Casa Castillo is one of the most esteemed producers in Spain. They are the most important producers in Jumilla. Their primary varietal is Monastrell (Mourvedre). It would be too easy to equate them with the most important Mourvedre producer in France, Domaine Tempier, and it would be appropriate. Both producers have elevated their regions on the world stage. They are the first producers that are thought of from their regions. Their wines are sought out by collectors the world over. Casa Castillo was one of the first producers in the region to start farming organically and biodynamically. They started transitioning away from long extractions and all new oak. They have taken Monastrell, which can be dark and intense and muscular and brought out a freshness and a brightness to it. Las Gravas is their exploration of their terroir. This is a higher elevation site and the soils are covered with more than a foot of rocks, the las gravas. With a shorter fermentation and aging in foudre and 500L French oak this wine has power, lift and a subtle polish. The fruit starts off dark and then brightens and the wine lingers with a long mineral and fruit laden finishes.
