Very ripe with a touch of date and fig to the blackberry fruit. A well-balanced, harmonious style that's searching and intense. Long, with fruity acidity throughout. A selection of the oldest vines of the estate (65-115 years old), organically grown on sandstone and marl, hand-picked, whole-bunch fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled after maturing in old foudres and demi-muids. The old vine cuvée is the 2020 Gigondas Ventabren, which is always 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault that's not destemmed and is brought up in older barrels. It exhibits a great nose of black cherry liqueur, framboise, sappy garigue, and flowers. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, layered, seamless 2020 with ultra-fine tannins and a great finish. It's a head-turning Gigondas to enjoy over the coming 10-15 years.

Bright violet color. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe cherry and blackberry, violet and vanilla, with woodsmoke and baking spice notes in the background. Broad and weighty in style, offering dark fruit preserve, licorice and mocha flavors and a spicy touch of cracked pepper. In a substantial and extroverted style, finishing long and smoky, with building tannins and repeating dark fruit notes. I suspect that some will prefer the classic bottling in this vintage, for its vibrancy. Those who like their Gigondas brawny will likely much prefer this one; my score reflects how I think the wine will turn out after some patience. (JR)

Juicy raspberries, strawberries, dried herbs, peppercorns and hints of orange peel on the nose follow through to a medium body with fine tannins. Elegant and refined with a caressing touch. Poised with good volume on the mid-palate and some crunchy berries. Precise, lively and long finish.

The 2020 Ventabren is another gem in a long string of successes we have had from Moulin de la Gardette. Jean-Baptiste Meunier continues to make strides forward in his winemaking creating some of the most distinctive and complex wines from Gigondas in the market. The fact that we have had a direct relationship with him has kept the prices tight on these wines over the years even following all the critical success he has been receiving. This new Ventabren in the glass evokes memories of walking through the forests in the mountains around the village to get to the heart of his old vine vineyards. Evocative is easily the best description. Aromas of incense, spice and garrigue emerge from the glass, flavors of blackberry, tobacco and wild thyme envelop the palate. The sweet fruit is perfectly balanced by the savory notes of this wine. This is another wine for the ages and should evolve beautifully for many more years to come. But what a pleasure to enjoy a bottle now!

Notes

The Cuvée Ventabren is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault from the property’s oldest vines, ranging from 80 to 100 years of age. All fermentation is done in cement tanks and the wine is aged for 18 months in large oak foudres. The wine is loaded with brambly black fruit, spice notes and that ever-present garrigue. Possessing a beautiful full body texture and an ample finish, this wine resonates beautifully and has all the hallmarks of a great southern Rhône wine. It is approachable now but has plenty of stuffing for short-term or long term cellaring. Serve it with roast meats, braises and stews. You’ll see why we keep coming back for JB’s wines.
