The 2020 de Viaud is a big, rich wine, just as it was en primeur. Blackberry jam, dark chocolate, spice and heavy torrefaction flavors give de Viaud its extroverted personality. From barrel, this was much more forthcoming, but élevage has added quite a bit of structure. Give this a year or two in bottle. (AG)

The Château de Viaud is situated in the village Lalande de Pomerol. The origin of the estate goes back to the 17th century. The present Château was built at the end of the 18th century. Known for their practice of holding back vintages to maturity, this small but high-quality Lalande-de-Pomerol producer crafts some best-in-class wines that are often tough to find but remarkably rewarding. De Viaud remains a family-run property of the Bielle family, and is a great reference-point for classic claret in the modern era.
