Monica Larner writes: "Casa d'Ambra is the leading wine producer on the tiny island of Ischia. Wines from this volcanic island offer a fascinating mineral character that comes from the soils and also from the breezy marine character of the island environment. The east side of the island has black soils made from crushed lava stone, and the west side has greenish tuff rock. This is unique geology, and its color comes from contact with sea water. The west side of the island has very compact soils, and the southern side is characterized by volcanic fumaroles. Andrea d'Ambra and his family have growing sites all over the island, and many of these wines are blends of fruit from different sites. This year, the family acquired an additional seven hectares of vines near the old Tenuta Calitto building, and this means production will be increased. The family is also dedicated to reviving and restoring abandoned Ischia vineyards."
