Int'l Wine Review

Medium cherry cored with a watery rim in the glass, the 2020 Estate Weathereye Grenache is aged in 100% neutral oak but includes approximately 40% stems during fermentation. Crushed red raspberry, mountain blueberry, candied cherry, Red Mountain herbs, Blood orange zest, and fresh linen emerge on the nose. An elegant wine that glides across the tongue and finishes with a stunning red cherry note all over the palate. Another exquisite Grenache by the Weathereye team. Highly recommended.

Fresh, rocky and firm, the 2020 Grenache offers a cherry core, with a pleasing dusty mineral essence, hints of wild herbs, sage and picturesque crunchy red fruit that shines with purity and finesse. Full-bodied, the generously-layered Grenache unwinds on the palate to reveal seductive crunchy red fruit tones, delicate mineral tension, a firm, tannic edge and a slightly spicy note on the finish. It's a hedonistic wine that proves Washington State can do almost anything. The wine spent 18 months in neutral oak. Watch out for this release later this year. Bravo! 2,100 bottles produced. (AM)

Châteauneuf du Pape-like notes of kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, sappy flowers, and baking spices all define the 2020 Grenache Estate, another impressive, richly textured, concentrated, structured wine from this team. I love the overall balance here, and it's going to round into form with 2-4 years of bottle age and drink brilliantly over the following decade.

This is aromatically discreet and the oak is evident in its Christmas spicing. An appealing ripe sweetness rises up, but it's not confected. Good acidity, with some denim-like tannins coming after the satin-textured red fruits and more sweetness on the finish from the oak. Medium- to full-bodied, well balanced, there's some masterful winemaking going on here. Flattering in texture. I would drink this now and enjoy its youthful elegance. (MW)

WeatherEye Vineyard is one of the most incredible plantings in the USA. A site so radical it's implementation has been 15 years in the making! Every block is intimately fine tuned to the specific altitude, slope, exposure, soil composition an unique qualities of the land. Instead of clearing the land before planting vines, existing native plants have also been incorporated into the vineyard in an effort to capture a true sense of place in the wines that includes the sous bois or garrigue type elements one might find in the wines of the Rhone Valley. The incredibly rocky volcanic soils, constant wind and elongated growing season the elevation brings gives the wines immense concentration and structure. Even though the vines are relatively young, the intensity of the wines here is already formidable. WeatherEye's Grenache is super impressive, and I say that as a huge fan but tough judge of Grenache! Grenache can easily produce rich, ripe, powerful, fruit driven wines. However, finding one that can harness that powerful fruit expression whilst retaining aromatic freshness and balanced acidity can be more challenging. Add in Grenache's notorious lack of color and structure...making truly inspirational Grenache is no mean feat. Well, the team at WeatherEye absolutely nailed it here! The Grenache block that produced this wine is just a third of an acre! However, the vines are packed in at a super high density and trained using a goblet pruning method. Soil in this micro block is very sandy with chunks of basalt throughout and very little organic matter. You can taste the struggle of the vines in the wine. Grenache is vigorous, and will throw a lot of crop on richer soils. The almost barren soils here and high-density planting seem to have concentrated the vine's efforts into producing unbelievably flavorful fruit. Once again, even though WeatherEye is a relatively new estate, this is already a benchmark for the varietal in the USA.

Notes

WeatherEye Vineyard on the ridge line of Red Mountain in Washington is without doubt one of the most exciting and radical plantings in the USA. The vineyard that is planted in dozens of micro-blocks draped over the peak and north facing aspect of the mountain were areas previously deemed up-plantable. The soils are extremely rocky and consist mostly of fractured basalt. The crest and slopes are constantly buffeted by relentless wind. The vineyard uses numerous different trellising systems, vine densities, and row orientations. Some blocks even have stone walls around individual vines (like La Geria in Lanzarote) to protect them from the harsh environment. When developing the vineyard, native scrub was intentionally left amongst the vines for biodiversity and also in hopes to capture some of the “garrigue” character of this unique site. The wines themselves are made by one of the state's most highly regarded and critically acclaimed winemakers, Todd Alexander. Formerly of Bryant Family, and Cade/Plumpjack in Napa Valley, Todd now makes cult Washington wines including Force Majeure, Pášxa, and The Walls. The buzz about WeatherEye is palpable throughout the wine business. Noted wine writer Alder Yarrow proclaimed: "Mark my words: the greatest wines Washington State has ever produced will come from one of the most ambitious vineyard projects I have ever seen in the United States... these wines [are] about to become some of the most sought-after wines made in Washington."
