Reviewed February 2022This is a very classically structured Bordeaux with blackcurrant, walnut, cedar and hints of toasted oak. It’s reserved now, but shows very serious, polished tannins. Persistent and powerful with fantastic length. Very precise.

The Wine Independent
The 2019 Phelan Segur is composed of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a lot of shaking to wake up notes of baked plums, blackcurrant pastilles, and clove oil, followed by hints of tree bark, graphite, and tapenade with a waft of crushed rocks. The full-bodied palate is super tightly wound at this stage, featuring very firm, ripe tannins and seamless acidity, finishing very long and earthy. (LPB)

Vinous
The 2019 Phélan-Ségur has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry and bilberry fruit, a subtle marine influence that develops with aeration. Very cohesive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very precise with wonderful mineralité and tension. This oozes class, a Swiss watch of a Saint-Estèphe with outstanding length and complexity. Top drawer and a benchmark for the estate. (NM)

This feels immediately dark, smoky, coherent and convincing in the nose, with smoked and sooty fruits, with dainty nuances of lavender, slate, salty minerals and tobacco pouch. The palate is totally complete, polished and velvety, with a core of sinewy fruits, all dried summer berries, violets and dark chocolate, draped in a medium-bodied substance over a finely honed core of tannins, ripe, fine and tightly knit together. This has such dramatic poise, the finish so coherent, with exotic touches, and the finish is a lingering and confident core of black, savoury, toasted fruits and fine tannins. A great Phélan-Ségur. The blend is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, picked from September 24th, and the élevage was in 55% new oak.

This is easily one of my favorite wines on the shelf. The critical acclaim and remarkable pricing are just bonuses—the real story lies in the bottle and the people behind it.
Over the past decade, Phélan-Ségur has evolved from a charming, under-the-radar estate into one of the region’s great collectible values. While other vintages may eventually rival it, the 2019 stands as the benchmark for me at the estate—a simply brilliant wine crafted by Véronique Dausse.
Aromatically, it offers black fruit layered with floral notes and a touch of earthiness. On the palate, it is undeniable: a stunning, finely pixelated texture that reveals nuance after nuance. Black and red fruits intermingle with persistent minerality, refreshing acidity, and a concentration that promises a long, exciting evolution. Like all great wines, it effortlessly invites another sip.
This is a superb Saint-Estèphe and one of the great success stories of 2019. I’d confidently put it up against the big names of the Northern Médoc, and it would have no trouble holding its own.
As I’ve mentioned before, this vintage from Phélan-Ségur is one we’re always searching for, but it’s rarely found. We’ll continue to pursue bottles with perfect provenance, though pricing like this will be difficult to match in the future—if more even surfaces. Grab it while it’s available, and you’ll secure one of the region’s triumphant wines for years to come, at a price that makes opening bottle after bottle an easy decision.

Maybe the biggest sleeper of the great 2019 vintage, this dark, cassis laden St. Estèphe has a generous nose, silky mouthfeel and a fresh back end. I love the clean earth that shows of the village of St. Estèphe in this, as well as the concentrated but never heavy mid palate. While this is really tempting to drink now, it will continue to age beautifully for decades. This would be a huge ringer in any tasting of high end bordeaux- it is good enough to stand on the table with just about anything.
Notes
Founded by Irish wine merchant Bernard Phelan in the early nineteenth century, this Saint-Estèphe estate took shape through the union of Clos de Garramey and Ségur de Cabanac. Its gravelly vineyards over clay lie near the Gironde estuary.
