Reviewed August 2023Hand picked, whole-bunch pressed to 500L French puncheons, wild-yeast fermented, matured for 10 months on lees. The Upper Yarra, on red volcanic soils, produces taut wines of extreme length. Here citrus, white stone fruit and green apple are bolstered by natural acidity. Winemaker David Bicknell makes the difficult seem easy.

Aromas of baked lemon, flint, hazelnut and lime zest. Medium-bodied with bright and driving acidity. The palate is energetic and fruity with an array of smoked citrus and apple fruit. Balanced and long. Textural at the finish.

Toasty-nutty oak and low-level reduction adds up to a complex and savoury bouquet, with hints of nougat. The wine is rich and full in the mouth, but also has some reserve and tension. The third wine in the Local Vineyard Series from Oakridge is this 2021 Henk Chardonnay, which is slick, glassy and powerful and punctuated by mineral acidity. It is rich and juicy, with layers of brine, honeydew melon, custard powder and Golden Delicious apples. The acidity really does spear through the very heart of this wine, putting the round fruit on notice and making it all stand up a little straighter. It's a mouthful, very smart and powerful and very good.

A very nice chardonnay that isn't over the top with the oak. A lightly floral and elegant nose with citrus, green apple, almond paste and subtle cream scents. In the mouth, quite zippy with stone fruits, orange, sour apple and rich melon flavors. It starts clean, fleshes out to become more viscous and finishes clean and bright. A superb chardonnay at this price!
