Reviewed February 2023There’s a compelling combination of precision and depth on this bottling. Aromas of lemon glaze, thinly sliced Asian pear and crushed oyster shell lead into an acid-driven palate, where rounded flavors of pear, honeysuckle and celery cling to a firm, exciting structure. (MK)

Year after year this is one of my go-to Chardonnays that never lets me down. Dan Morgan was a pioneer of the Santa Lucia Highlands planting Double L Vineyard in 1982 around the same time that Gary Pisoni established his first vines. Double L Vineyard (that forms the core of this wine plus some fruit from neighbors) is also one of the only organically farmed and certified vineyards in the AVA and has been for many many years. Despite being a stalwart for decades, 8 years ago winemaker Sam Smith joined the team at Morgan and has taken the wines to the next level. Sam has added a level of complexity and intrigue to the wines that I think elevates the beyond their peers. The 2021 Highland Chard starts off with subtle struck flint, toasted grains, white flowers, yellow stone fruit; the palate is nicely concentrated and packed with flavor yet the cool-climate, racy acidity keeps a lovely tension and vibrancy in the wine. Judicious use of oak frames the wine without intruding. The finish is full of wet granite mineral, preserved citrus, salted pepitas and lingering oak spice. A fantastic all-around bottle of Chardonnay that has great fruit and texture on the palate, nicely integrated oak and boundless energy and drive. Really classy stuff.

Nearly half of the fruit for the 2021 “Highland” Chardonnay comes from Morgan’s own Double L Vineyards, with the other half sourced from neighboring McIntyre and Tondre vineyards. The wine is fermented in French Oak barrels, 27% of which are new, adding layers of richness and creamy texture that is well balanced by freshness. Rich texture never turns to buttery flavors, however, instead steering toward lemon curd, baked pear, red apple, almond, delicate white flowers, and subtle baking spice. This is full bodied chardonnay that exhibits lovely balance.

Lovely fresh and crisp style of Chardonnay but with delicious rich tropical and lemon curd note due to aging in 1/3 new French oak barrels. It's well balanced between bright but tamed acidity and supple fruit on the palate which makes finish linger on for a long time. Style somewhat similar to St- Aubin in Burgundy. Would be a great companion to chicken dishes and white fish.
Notes
Fruit comes largely from Morgan's organically certified estate Double L Vineyard, plus long-term relationships with other renowned SLH vineyards - McIntyre and Tondré. The fruit is hand-picked and sorted, then is whole-cluster pressed and fermented in French oak, 27% new, and aged sur lees for 8 months.
