Decanter
Reviewed January 2023A marvel of complexity and depth, with aromas ranging from bright citrus to richer notes of melon and ripe apple, along with hints of hazelnut and mineral with a broad and ripe texture which is eminently balanced. 18 months in cask (10% new), it is drinking well now but should age nicely over the mid-term. An emblematic cuvée for the domaine. (CC)

Bottled just prior to my visit, the 2020 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Les Cras has a taut and crisp, petrichor-tinged bouquet, backward compared to Merlin's other cuvées but nicely focused. The palate is well balanced with a slight menthol tincture, fine acidity with plenty of substance towards the slightly honeyed finish that manages to maintain tension. Excellent. (NM)

Ripe aromas include those of pear and apple compote, just sliced lemon and a barely perceptible application of wood. The rich, succulent and seductively textured flavors possess very good mid-palate density along with better depth and persistence. This generously proportioned effort is very good for its level and worth checking out and in particular it would make a good choice for an all-around house white. *Outstanding*

From magnum. A golden glow to the colour but still with a green thread. Optimum energy is displayed on the nose, some butteriness, partly from the oak, with a fresher lime-infused backbone. The two aspects are growing into each other. Highly impressive and still really youthful.

Baked apples, roasted hazelnut and lemon cream notes dominate the palate with good bright acidity on the finish and juicy Meyer lemon note. It's very elegant and well balanced with lovely roundness reminiscent of Meursault.
Notes
Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "55-80-year-old vines. They have been making this wine since 1987 when the domaine first started with 4.5 hectares…A breadth of cushioned aroma – different for sure to the 21s. Supple, silky, almost an oily silk to this texture. Concentrated and long finishing. This is a more powerful wine when compared to the 21s that I’ve been tasting but less directly energetic. Still, a very drinkable, tasty, wine." (10/2022)
