Decanter

Reviewed October 2021
A wine of incredible concentration: lush, lovely fruit, deep complexity and impressive power all at once. In 2020, the wine impresses immediately with deep colour and a super-ripe plum and fig fruit, touched with earthy mineral notes and a hint of spice. There is plenty of depth and some of the firmest tannins in the cellar in this wine. This is truly substantial and should age for decades to come. De Vogüé owns 2.7ha at the southern extremity of the appellation, nearly all of it on the clay soils that are referred to as terres rouges. Drinking Window 2025 - 2050. (CC)

A slightly riper nose reflects the classic blue berry fruit of a fine Bonnes Mares along with hints of cassis, earth and a hint of violet. The sleek, intense and much more imposingly scaled flavors possess even better mid-palate concentration while delivering super length on the saline inflected and very firm finish which really fans out as it sits on the palate.

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares from Comte de Vogüé is a big and beautifully balanced wine in this vintage, offering up scents of dark berries, black cherries, bitter chocolate, venison, a fine base of soil, woodsmoke, a nice touch of violet in the upper register and a deft foundation of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full and beautifully sappy at the core, with firm, ripe tannins, tangy acids, fine focus and balance and a long, primary finish that closes with excellent mineral drive. This will be a long-distance runner and need plenty of cellaring, but it will be fine bottle when it is ready to drink. (Drink between 2035-2100)

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a very tight nose at first, opening with black cherries, iodine, peony and inky scents. Quintessentially Bonnes Mares. The palate is quite dense on the entry, slightly lactic in texture with hints of dark chocolate infusing the dark berry fruit, the finish structured and more Morey-like in style. This will need a decade in bottle. (NM)

Notes

91-95pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "The colour is defined by a black centre with a purple rim. Again this is super-rich on the nose, with very sweet blackcurrant fruit, rather hiding the detail and even the structure. Fresh enough finish but really hard to pick out as yet. The aroma from the empty glass is flamboyant liqueur raspberry and bilberry. Will this transmogrify into a legendary wine: maybe, but for the moment I am cautious about the atypical richness and fruit profile. Tasted: November 2021."
