The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru contains less whole-bunch fruit, at 10%, and is matured entirely in new oak. This was the only cuvée to demonstrate a little reduction on the nose, though it’s nothing to worry about at this stage, as there is plenty of intense blackberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, saturated tannins and touches of fresh fig and blood orange toward the vibrant finish. This is, strangely, more approachable than the Les Amoureuses at the moment, but the class is here from start to finish. Superb. (NM)

There is purity here, along with finesse and an underlying power. Cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral flavors set the pace, and the harmony pulls it all together. Just when you think this red will give up its charms readily, the refined structure sweeps in and shuts down the finish. The lasting impression is ripe fruit. Best from 2025 through 2050.

Notes

97-99pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Picked 28th August. 100% whole cluster and 100% new wood, both of which this ancient vineyard can handle. Deep purple, with a sensual nose, enhanced by the whole bunch content. Then the oak emerges just a little bit, totally in support. There’s an incredible density here at the back of the mouth, centenarian vines more or less. This has a completely different register of fruit, head and shoulders. Finishes fresh, almost austere but there is too much fruit weight for that. The fruit is perfectly on the cusp of red and black, with a little salinity as well. Tasted: November 2019."
