On another level, the 2018 Cornas Reynard is a tour de force and up there with the finest Cornas to ever pass my lips. Deep purple-hued, with a gorgeous perfume of crème de cassis, blackberries, powdered granite, violets, and peppery spice, it’s full-bodied and brings another level of elegance in its tannins as well as density on the palate. Full-bodied and perfectly balanced, with ultra-fine tannins, I can’t imagine a better Cornas, nor a Cornas that holds onto such a classic representation of the appellation paired with purity, elegance, and finesse.

Greater depth and tannic finesse than this producer's 2018 Chaillots, with violets, raspberries, blackberries and rosemary all crowding for attention at this stage. Very smooth and velvety mouthfeel, displaying no heaviness, but with a robust tannic structure that's very Cornas. Long finish, with a big, mineral undertow. (MW)

Deep magenta. Highly perfumed dark berry, violet, smoky mineral and olive aromas show superb clarity and a touch of spiciness. Offers sweet, palate-staining blackberry, cherry-cola, succulent herb and floral pastille flavors that deepen slowly and take on a licorice nuance with aeration. Rich but lively as well, finishing with emphatic back-end cut, building tannins and impressively persistent floral, mineral and exotic spice notes. (JR)

Notes

John Livinstone Learmonth The Cradle of the Rhone: ") (Tezier old Syrah, Vieille Côte, decomposed granite, used 228-litre cask) ****** vibrant dark robe. The nose is thick, multi-layered, broad, has sultry undertones. There’s an immediate burst on the attack, zap, a wave of black fruits, good acidity, holds fine grain tannins, stretches out, has a grippy close. It’s interesting, intellectual, comes with good orchestration beyond the Rock n’Roll of the terroir and finesse – Procol Harum playing Conquistador in Alberta or at the London Palladium recently. It has lovely juice, is way to go, seizes the palate, is long beyond measure. 36 years 2) (the same wine, in 10 hl barrel) ***** very dark; the nose is restrained, gives hints off black olives, cherry stone. The palate has a measured run of richness, with a careful extension of dark fruits. It holds back more than the cask version because of its larger barrel size, is fresh, refined, comes with excellent length, oak nudges at the end. It holds its cards close to its chest for now. 37 years 3) (the rest of the Vieilles Vignes, used 228-litre cask) ****** black-purple colour; the nose is elegant, fulfilling, shows black fruits, marked violets, mixed berries, a coulis style to them. The palate resumes on Burgundian wheels with silk, rolling gras, careful intensity. This is stylish par excellence, classy, shapely, very thorough, too. 37 years 4)." Dec 2019
