I can't get enough of these OP Glen Gariochs. This distillery is absolutely exceptional and nobody ever talks about it. What's even more incredible is that the stocks we've been buying - 2008, 2010, 2011 - have kept getting older, but the price has stayed the same or even gone down considering the dollar is weaker now than when we bought our last 2008 and sold for $50. The whiskies just keep getting better and better though. The color is pale straw. OH WOW the nose just pops with a huge buttered biscuit, quince jam, pure clean roasted malt, yellow berries, fresh grass and an herbal earthy backbone. On the palate there's great sweetness up front and a slight perfum-y quality in the middle which melds into a buttery texture and some gorgeous yellow fruit. I don't know why everything feels yellow here. With a nice hit of water the zest comes out, adding yuzu peel, fresh hay now, some zingy mineral character and some gorgeous grape character - almost a slight muscadine note. This is way less bready and roasted oat-y than the last one. For those looking for an exciting affordable highlander in the most classic sense, this is an easy buy. Don't forget to add water!!!

Notes

The wonderful "urban" Glen Garioch is one of Scotland's oldest. Founded in 1797, it sits in the heart of the Scottish breadbasket, the fertile lands in the relatively temperate eastern highlands producing the vast majority of Scotland's barley crop. While the warrant to distill was official in '97, they were likely making whisky here many many decades before that. The stupendous and underrated distillery is in the heart of a residential neighborhood in the small town of Oldmeldrum and has become one of our very favorites. It gets little attention in the Scotch world, mostly thanks to their safe core offerings and competition within the owner’s portfolio. It makes a satisfying and distinctly Highland style that offers the very classic malt driven style that we value as true lovers of cask strength single barrel scotch. Incredibly we've had access to good stock through this bottler, Douglas Laing, for the last few years and even more impressively the prices have stayed extremely reasonable while distillers all over Scotland raise their prices and these stocks continue to mature very nicely. It's not flashy or big, but it's pure and complex.
