Reviewed August 2020From one of the top sites in the Russian River Valley and brought up in 40% new French oak, the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Ritchie Vineyard offers an Haut-Brion Blanc-like bouquet of caramelized pineapple, honeyed flowers, lemon butter, and quince, with a touch of rocky minerality thrown in for good measure. Beautifully rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has a beautiful spine of acidity and a monster of a finish. It ranks with the finest Sauvignon Blancs coming out of California today! I'd lean toward drinking bottles over the coming 3-5 years, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve for over a decade.

Until recently, I knew nothing of Crescere wines. But when someone sends me samples of an old vine, Ritchie vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, with 98 points and comparisons to Haut-Brion Blanc...I sit up and start paying attention. The luxurious, heavy bottle is fitting for the powerful and concentrated wine inside. White flowers on the nose, struck flint, yellow plum, nectarine, lemon curd, wet stone and cut herbs. The palate shows much of the same, ranging from riper, golden stone fruit characters to more mouthwatering, zesty citrus elements, all given another layer of depth by the subtle oak, and lees derived texture. The finish is powerful and persistent as is common for this heralded planting. Despite the wines voluminous expression and effusive nature, the core of mineral infused acidity keeps everything under tension and nicely focused. It's a show stopping wine, and a worthy rendition of this world-class vineyard. Great stuff!

What a brilliant Sauvignon Blanc. While I often hear comps to Bordeaux Blanc from top-tier renditions from California and Washington, I feel like they often don't deliver at that level. Crescere's Ritchie hits the nail on the head. I'm not sure it delivers the ethereal elegance of Haut Brion Blanc, but to me, it certainly could hold its own on a table with the likes of the top whites from DDC, SHL, or Pape-Clément. Aromatically there's a panoply of stone fruit, but it is the mix of bright acid and rich texture that makes this wine so stunning. Flavors of peach, pineapple, and white pepper linger on a wine that has undeniable depth and persistence. I was a huge fan of this when we first offered. At our current pricing, it is a must-try of the highest caliber.
