Wine Advocate

Reviewed January 2021
Another terrific success is the 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, deep and concentrated wine that's supple and layered, evocative of cherries, cassis, plums, violets and spices. Deep and seamless, it concludes with a perfumed, bergamot-inflected finish. Domaine Ponsot started picking on September 20, and winemaker Alexandre Abel reported yields some 35% to 40% below average, with alcohols in the 14s and healthy pHs at around 3.3. Yet while alcohols in 2019 were if anything higher than in 2018, the 2019 wines are more elegant, with livelier fruit tones and less overtly muscular structure. That's not a criticism of the 2018s, however, which we revisited from bottle, confirming that they are wines that will require patience: interestingly, the most put-together of the range was the Clos de la Roche, a cuvée that was bottled last, in July 2020, and which certainly seemed to have profited from the longer élevage. Ripe, perfumed and beautifully layered aromas include notes of poached plum, dark raspberry liqueur, warm earth and hints of violet and exotic tea. The ultra-sleek, intense and focused medium weight plus flavors possess an almost pungent minerality before culminating in a moderately austere, linear and impressively persistent finale. This is an unusually powerful Chapelle and is also quite firmly structured.

According to winemaker, Alexandre Abel, the young vines in this domaine-owned parcel of Chapelle-Chambertin require a very precise organisation, so pickers will go through the vineyard four times to ensure ripeness. The work is paying off, for this is marvellous, with a superbly aromatic rose petal and red fruit nose, and a piercingly sweet character to the fruit on the palate. The wine is extraordinarily supple and elegant, but has the substance to continue to age for decades. Drinking Window 2024 - 2039. (CC)

Notes

94-97 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "The Chapelle-Chambertin is permitted a slightly longer vinification at slightly lower temperatures than the other re wines. It is the first to eb picked and the last to be decanted out of the fermentation vats. It has paid dividends this year. The colour offers a wealth of exuberant deep purple. The nose too is joyous, making an immediate statement of ripe but delightful deep raspberry and succulent strawberry fruit. There is a wealth of fruit right across the palate then this same strong mineral acidity to finish. The fruit seems to darken (in a good way) in the glass. This is going to be pretty special."
