Burghound

Reviewed January 2021
Perfumed and very pretty aromas speak of elegant dark Pinot fruit that is cut with interesting hints of spiced tea, blood orange and whiff of humus character. There is both good volume and intensity to the tautly muscular, dusty and impressively complex finale that exhibits sneaky good length. This is also relatively tightly wound as the compact tannins will need time to resolve. *Outstanding*

This wine is to me the Musigny of Marsannay, the iron fist in the velvet glove with its Luxardo cherry power, layered spices and concentrated, powerful mid-palate impression. The finish is long and sweet- I can’t wait to have it with duck leg confit!

Notes

89-92 points Jasper Morris for Inside Burgundy: "20% whole bunch vinification and 25% new wood on a crinoidal limestone terroir. Bouncing vibrant red fruit, starts well and then really expands, all in the second half. Red berry fruit enlivened by a couple of blacker notes, good oak integration and very long. Champs Salomon joins Grandes Vignes at the top of the 2019 class." (12/2020)
