Estournells-St-Jacques is a comparatively small Premier Cru located - as its name suggests - just about the Clos St-Jacques in one of the coolest and highest sites in Gevrey-Chambertin up against the forest. It's a suitably sappy, floral wine with impressive structure and acidity, especially in a year like 2018. Floral, refined and well-balanced it's often something of a bargain chez Duroché. Drinking Window 2022 - 2028. (TA)

Aromatic and precise, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques reveals lovely aromas of peonies, rose petals, orange rind and red berries. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and succulent, with melting tannins and a fragrant core of fruit. As I wrote last year, the quietly confident Pierre Duroché—who once represented France in rock climbing—took over this eight-hectare Domaine in 2005. He knows what he wants to achieve and is well on the way to achieving it. Blessed with an enviable patrimony of vineyard holdings and plenty of old vines too, his hand-harvested grapes see gentle macerations and élevage with decidedly modest percentages of new wood. Stems, thoughtfully employed, are increasingly part of the equation. The ensuing wines are beautifully fragrant, with filigree tannins, vibrant fruit tones and sneaky persistence. Duroché harvested early in 2018 and has produced a lovely range of fragrant, elegant and unusually vibrant wines that I can't wait to taste again from bottle. His 2017s, which I also revisited, are showing beautifully, capturing all the inherent charm of the vintage. In short, Domaine Duroché continues its ascent, and readers who haven't yet taken notice should do so before it's too late.(WK)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, of which there are two barrels this year, has a reticent nose at the moment, a little tertiary in style, gradually opening to reveal attractive chalk dust notes. The palate has a fleshy, almost pastille-like opening, quite forward and open compared to other cuvées, although I find that the Cazetiers has more complexity on the finish. The 10–15% whole bunch adds a little spice and depth, and this cuvée improves with aeration and evolves much more personality. Give it plenty of bottle age. (NM)

Notes

92-94pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Rich dense purple. A deep and powerful colour, with a certain strictness to the bouquet which is far from unwelcome in 2018, and a really clean clear-cut chiselled approach on the palate even though the fruit is clearly ripe. Impressive density and length."
