Reviewed January 2019The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village is less expressive on the nose compared to its Nuits Saint-Georges counterpart, coming across as broody and a little withdrawn at the moment. The palate is well balanced, quite mineral-driven and much more open. This starts in understated fashion but seems to gain depth and precision toward the slightly confit-like finish. Great potential, but it needs time. (NM)

From 6 plots: Raviolles, Jacquines, Saules, Vigneux, Les Ormes and Les Barreaux. Fine bright purple without the weight and depth of the Nuits. Plenty of elegant perfumed red fruit, raspberry and cherry and a light coating of sandalwood, a slight wood effect, not quite the intensity but it is certainly fine and very persistent. Emmanuel speaks of deep and black fruit.

A classic Vosne nose offers up a lovely array of spice elements on the overtly floral nose of mostly red and dark pinot fruit where a hint of sandalwood lurks in the background. The sleek and more refined if not quite as concentrated flavors culminate in a delicious, dusty and balanced finale. This needs to add depth in order to achieve the upper end of my projected range but the underlying material is present for that to occur.

Rouget opted to mature the 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village in a mere 30% new oak this year, hoping to preserve the purity of the vintage's fruit, and the result is a beautifully balanced wine that bursts from the glass with aromas of smoky raspberries, sweet spices and candied peel. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and expressive with melting tannins and a gourmand but succulent core of fruit, concluding with a beautifully delineated finish. (WK)
