Notes
New Zealand’s Central Otago tends to steal the show for New Zealand Pinot. But for bright, focused, cool-climate Pinot Noir, it’s impossible to beat the value coming out of North Canterbury. Greystone is a top producer here and is named for the grey-colored, limestone-rich soils in their vineyards. Limestone soils are a common thread among great Pinot Noir—from Burgundy in France to Calera in California. The 2017 Nor’Wester is a great example of exceptional Pinot Noir made in conditions perfectly suited to this variety. There are three major components here: black fruit, earthiness, and savory. They interplay in a way that brings a ton of depth to the glass, with black cherry, black raspberry, forest floor, and leather all playing off one another in each sip. *organic*
