This is no ordinary brut sans année. I tasted this with Damien at the maison this May, and three times this week, and I was impressed by the generous, creamy, white fruit character of the wine. This wine is entirely fermented in large oak barrels, and comes from vineyards tended to like a vanity garden. It is composed of 70% Chouilly Grand Cru and 30% Cramant Grand Cru, with 30% reserves from his solera-style foudre of older vintages. The back end not only has the chalk that one would expect but also a very nice chestnut flavor. This is top-class blanc de blancs, and no one that enjoys this style should miss it given the extraordinary price.

The latest round of champagnes from Damien Hugot and wife Miwa Hirase are big, bold, barrel fermented beasts that somehow retain all the elegance and purity that only top notch champagne can deliver. 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay from Chouilly and Cramant (designated Grand Cru in 1910 -- over 25 years before France created its A.O.C. system), its born in a large oak barrel (foudre) and part of the blend is a perpetual reserve that is also aging in foudre. The result is a depth and complexity that most brut non-vintage champagnes don't reach until they've aged for a long time. If you're a Bollinger, Philiponnant, Charles Heidsieck, or Vilmart fan, Damien Hugot is the grower-producer you've been looking for. Rich, creamy, with notes of hazelnut, honey, pear, and orchard fruit all wrapped up in a toasty package!

Slightly rounder and more generous than the extra brut, yet still clean and mineral driven. Notes of green apple, Meyer lemon, and white flowers glide into the subtly creamy mid-palate before finishing crisp and dry. Elegant, versatile, and beautifully balanced.

This a lean, sharp Champagne! Though softer than his Extra Brut, this is still Hugot's high acid style. But there's more going on here! There's loads of crisp minerality, followed by a lovely fruit that shines through on the palate. It's got brioche and creaminess, as well. If you're on the hunt for high acid grower Champagne, this bottle is hard to beat!

Notes

Damien Hugot is a 25th-generation grower, with 20 acres of estate vineyards, mostly in the Grand Crus of Cramant and Chouilly. The Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs is composed entirely of Chouilly and Cramant, and mostly from old massal selected vines. This wine, which is 100% Chardonnay, has incredible richness and great toastiness for a Blanc de Blancs. We are very proud to import these wines directly, and offer them at such good prices. If you are looking for a bottle of Champagne that has both toast and the classy chalk of the best vineyards for Chardonnay, look no further! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)
