Reviewed October 2018An assemblage of two different terroirs: yellow marls overlaid with large pebbles at higher altitude, and clay-limestone on the plain. The fruit is all hand-harvested, destemmed then fermented with gentle extraction. The wine is aged in large oak foudres for four months before bottling. It's deep and juicy, with appealing plum and blueberry fruits. There's more blackberry on the palate, along with dense tannins. It's very well balanced and well structured, with good length. A good value pick among the 2017 Rasteaus. (MW)

Aged in foudres, the 2017 Rasteau is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. It's a pretty classic example of the appellation, with hints of chocolate drizzled over spiced cherries. Full-bodied and creamy-ripe, it somehow remains lively and mouthwatering on the finish. (JC)

The 2017 Rasteau is another high-quality wine in the making. Offering classic notes of scorched earth, dark fruits, licorice, and obvious minerality, it’s medium-bodied, has impressive depth of fruit, and a clean, enjoyable finish. It shows the fruit-forward style of the vintage as well as the classic signature of the appellation.

Vigneron Thibaut Chamfort has been impressing us with all his wines for the last few years and has been a superb addition to our portfolio. His entry Cotes du Rhone remains one of our best selling Rhones. His two wines that always blow me away for pure QPR though are the Sablet and this little Rasteau here. More on the Sablet another time... Most of his Rasteau holdings sit on a plateau overlooking the Rhone. One site is fractured limestone gravel over chalky clay and the other is beige marl with river pebbles. The altitude and hillside exposure often give you wines that have a Chateauneuf feel but since they are from Rasteau, they generally don't hit Chateauneuf prices. Deeper berry fruit tones, purple flowers, spices, this has it all. It's hard to argue with Thibaut's continued successes, especially when they're right here in my glass.

This wine truly impressed me. It offers so much depth and richness at the price and remains fresh throughout. It's the ideal combination of perfectly ripe fruit from a warm vintage and just the right balance of tannins and acidity. There's a good percentage of Syrah blended with Grenache which adds some delicious spiced dark fruit notes and additional weight on the palate. Impressive.

Thibaut Chamfort of Domaine Verquiere invests the accumulated experience of four generations of winemaking in every glistening bottle that leaves the cellar, and his wines have proven to be an irresistible favorite with our customers. Youthfully vibrant fruit unveils aromas of blackcurrants, cherries and baking spices with exuberant flavors of ripe black plums and blueberries and a balanced scaffold of tannins on the pleasurable finish. Excellent paired with a wintry cottage pie of grass-fed beef, sharp cheddar, peas and carrots smothered in mashed potatoes.
