Reviewed December 2019The 2017 Climat du Valle from Gilles Lafouge is truly excellent. The nose wafts from the glass in a classy and red fruity blend of cherries, pomegranate, mustard seed, raw cocoa, dark soil tones, roses and a deft framing of cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, full and quite sappy at the core, with lovely focus and grip, ripe, suave tannins, tangy acids and a long, elegant and soil-driven finish. This is going to be a very, very good bottle of Auxey with just a bit of patience.

Somewhat more structured and reserved than the outgoing Duresses, the 2017 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Climat du Val unwinds in the glass with aromas of smoky berry fruit, plums, loamy soil and spice. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a satiny attack, good depth at the core and enough fleshy fruit to largely conceal its chassis of fine but chalky structuring tannin. This will merit a few years' bottle age. (WK)
