Talk about a gem in the vintage, I was blown away by the 2016 Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker on each of the three times I was able to taste it. This estate has been on an undeniable roll since the arrival of Marjolaine de Conicnck in 2009, and the 2016 is unquestionably the best yet. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc, brought up in 65% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by an essence of Cabernet bouquet that includes loads of crème de cassis, blueberries, graphite, crushed rocks, sandalwood, and violets. Almost Saint Julien in style, this beauty is laser-focused on the palate, medium to full-bodied, brilliantly textured, and has a blockbuster finish. It deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for 25-30 years. Bravo!

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Marquis d'Alesme Becker leaps from the glass with gregarious notions of plum preserves, crème de cassis and Black Forest cake with hints of potpourri, star anise, menthol and tapenade. Full, rich, firm and grainy, with fantastic freshness lifting the densely packed palate, it has a long, beautifully fragrant finish. (LPB)

This is a vintage with plenty of structure, and things remain a little closed even at 7 years old. Give it time to unroll the blackberry and bilberry fruits, and enjoy the oyster shell salinity on the mouthwatering finish, together with a curl of crayon, woodsmoke and soy that add length and an umami touch. Harvest October 4 to October 14. Marjolaine de Coninck technical director and CEO, owner Nathalie Perrodo.

From 15 hectares of vines planted at 10,000 vines per hectare, picked at a yield of 47 hl/ha. The harvest began on September 20th and finished on October 4th. The fruit saw a pre-fermentation cold maceration. A classic Cabernet nose here, very dark and pure, with precise blackcurrant aromatics, but along with this there are ribbons of mint and green peppercorn, The palate shows a broad texture, correct, with dark fruits, still with a subtle minty seam, but it also has an impressive substance, an imposing central core of ripe tannins, nicely carried by the body of the wine, all of which interplays well with the fresh acid definition that typifies the vintage. A good length, filled with ripe, finely grained tannins. A surprisingly strong and correctly judged effort from this estate.

Notes
