The estate takes its name from the 1950 marriage of Paula Meyer and Willibald Näkel who went on to cultivate 1.5 hectares of vines in the Ahr Valley. Näkel and then his son, Werner, bucked the trend in German winemaking to produce sweet wines and instead focused on making dry, red wines with Pinot grapes grown on steep hillside vineyards. Today, Werner's daughters, Meike and Dörte, manage the winery.
