Reviewed November 2018This is a limited edition blend of straight ryes, including 32% estate-grown Vermont rye aged two years, 45% Indiana rye aged six years and 23% Canada rye, aged 10 years. Whistle Pig raised the share of its own 2 year old rye from 20 percent to 32 percent in this second Farmstock release, balancing it against 6 and 10 year old sourced ryes, like in the 001 release. Fresh oak mixes with vanilla, orange peel, and pepper on the nose, leading to a palate of vanilla and butterscotch. Citrus emerges with water. Pepper notes return on the finish, along with chocolate and caramel. There’s youthfulness here, but also potential. (DF, Fall 2018)
Notes
About a third of the whiskey in this blend is produced with rye from Whistle Pig's own farm and aged in custom-built Vermont White Oak barrels. The distiller's notes: "Delicate fruitiness gives way to a full-bodied burst of spice, rounded by notes of allspice and cinnamon and balanced with a pleasant dryness. White pepper and oak spice leave a light and surprisingly lengthy finish."
