Reviewed April 2018
Vincent Carême earned organic certification for his 42-acre domaine, including the two adjacent parcels of 50-year-old vines that provide fruit for Le Peu Monrier. He makes this wine in 400-liter barrels, ten percent of them new, leaving the wine to rest on the lees for ten months after spontaneous fermentation. It’s a massive Vouvray, all about white tuffeau soil and vertical structure, a wine that will need years to mellow from its powerful youth toward grandeur (it’s already pretty awesome). Fresh, firm, stony and brisk, hinting at apple skin and lemon zest, this will reward patient cellaring.

The 34-acre vineyard of Tania and Vincent Carême is run organically. This wine, from a parcel of old vines, is dry with signs of its wood aging attractively melding into the apple and spice fruits. With intense acidity and a tight texture, the wine is still fruity and young. It can be drunk now although it is worth waiting until 2022 for a more mature perspective. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

When you taste a great Vouvray, the purest expression of Chenin Blanc emerges. It is a wine that unfolds with grace and elegance but also underlying power. Dry expressions such as the Careme Le Peu Morier resonate and crackle on the palate with nerve and intensity. The feeling is akin to a Grand Cru Chablis but with more stone fruit notes. The Le Peu Morier even feels like a great Vaudesir from the likes of Dauvissat or Patrick Piuze, with its surge of energy, body and fruit intensity. The profile is still Vouvray, with flavors of grilled nectarine, smoked orange peel, blanched almonds and kumquats. It is harmonious and youthful and is the kind of white you should not fear decanting if you consume it on the young side. Cellaring is definitely not out of order here either. With a few more years, the flavors will enjoy even greater depth. This is a true beauty and a worthy wine for anyone who enjoys stunning whites of all shapes and sizes.

Notes

Vincent Careme grew up in Vouvray, and under the watchful eye of his grandfather made his first wine at the age of 14. He went to oenology school, completed his studies and traveled the world learning about winemaking in different regions including Alsace, Champagne and even Thailand! During a four year tour working on Chenin Blanc in South Africa, he met his wife Tania. Together they returned to Vouvray and founded Domaine Vincent Careme. With 37 acres now under vine and two special lieu-dits, Vincent and Tania farm organically and are making some of the most profound and long lived styles in Vouvray. The "Le Peu Morier" is one such parcel grown on the magical tuffeaux (limestone) and silex (flint) soils. The wine is fermented with native yeasts, aged in 400L barrels and minimal sulfur is used. It is a tense and vibrant wine that expresses its incredible terroir.
