The Prestige has earned its place as Jean-Baptiste’s top cuvee; using reserves of a very special Pinot Meunier aged in a solera started in the 2000’s and spending years on the lees gives this wine a unique expressiveness and that indescribable “iron fist in a velvet glove” quality I can never resist. The current cuvee is built on the 2019 vintage and is a 40/30/30 blend of Pinot Meunier/Chardonnay/Pinot Noir. It has all the beautiful, toasted hazelnut and honey notes that make it oh-so-irresistible now, but with the structure and acidity to reward cellaring. This is a “wow” champagne!

Now this one feels special. A really expressive Champagne with lovely cider notes and plenty of orchard fruit, especially ripe peach. Baking spice notes add some warmth and complexity to the nose, while the palate has plenty of punch and energy. There’s a nice richness here, but the acidity keeps it from feeling heavy. Distinctive, layered, and definitely a step up from the standard Brut.

This smells like raw croissant dough in the best way. Forty percent of the blend is Meunier drawn from a barrel-aged perpetual reserve started in the early 2000s, so dozens of vintages are layered in. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir split the rest. The wine goes through full malolactic and spends more than five years on the lees. The result is rich, bready and full of character. At under $40, it tastes far more expensive than it is.

This flagship bottling from Gilbert Jacquesson is comprised of 40% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir & 30% Chardonnay, and delivers so much bang for the buck. With fresh citrus, ripe cherry, crisp granny smith apple, whiffs of savory herbs and just the right amount of toasty lees from the extensive, near decade-long aging. An absolute stunner for under $40!
Notes
Gilbert Jacquesson's top offering comes from estate vineyards planted in the village of Troissy, in the heart of the Marne Valley. It is composed of 40% Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, and 30% Pinot Noir. The Meunier is all reserve wines from old plots that is barrel fermented and barrel aged for one year. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)
