What a crowd-pleaser at the lunch. The French journalists were amazed by this Barolo, and kept saying how it was very Burgundian. It’s certainly a crazy wine with aromas of dried fruits, flowers, nuts and tea. Then it changes in the glass to spices and berries. Phenomenal. Goes on for minutes.

Fabulous purity of crushed fruit - strawberries and raspberries, with hints of fresh roses. Full-bodied, with an amazing concentration and a palate that goes on and on and on. Ultraripe tannins. This is the Romanée-Conti of Barolo. Terrific balance and richness. From selected parcels in Giacosa's Falletto vineyard. First made in 1997.

I have never been a huge fan of the 2000 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga. These are especially fine bottles. However, they are among the best I have ever tasted. Once again, I am blown away by the wine’s freshness. Crushed red berry fruit, kirsch, rose petal, mint and cinnamon give this fragrant Riserva so much allure. This is one of the great surprises of the evening. (AG)

Notes

97+ points, Ian D'Agata for Vinous: "Good full ruby-red with a hint of amber at the rim. Superripe aromas of red fruits, dried rose and licorice, complicated by hints of kirsch, tomato paste, tobacco and herbs. Then sweet, rich and large scaled on the palate, with remarkably creamy, complex flavors of red cherry, marzipan and truffle nicely lifted by sound, harmonious acids. Turns a bit more austere with air, finishing very long and perfumed, with building, substantial but polished tannins that will require another eight to ten years of patience. Perhaps the best Riserva Barolo from a vintage that was ludicrously overrated by some critics, but there's no doubt that Giacosa enjoyed major successes with all his Barolos and Barbarescos in 2000. What I especially like about this wine is that it actually resembles a 2001 more than it does a 2000, combining the wonderful acidity of the later year with the fleshy creaminess of the earlier vintage."
