Fabulous aromas of crushed berries such as blackberries and blackcurrants, not to mention spices. Wet earth and cedar, too. Complex. Full-bodied, yet agile and complete. A dense center palate. Ultra-round tannins. Everything in the right balance. Wonderful to taste but better to drink in 2022.

Int'l Wine Review

Review Date: 10/2017
The 2014 Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the finest wines from the vintage. Impressing with its remarkable overall purity, elegance and sheer class, this slowly opens to striking aromatics of blackberries and cherries which are woven together with spices, spring florals, tobacco, graphite and hints of toast all taking shape. Beautifully structured and balanced, this displays remarkable depth and precision, which place it on another level of quality. It continues to impress as everything comes together seamlessly on the long, polished finish, as this leaves a lasting impression. This is a simply gorgeous wine, which will undoubtably thrive in the cellar and continue to provide incredible satisfaction for many years to come. (JD)

The 2014 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is show-stopping stuff, and it goes a long way toward proving how successful the northern parts of the Médoc were in this vintage. Lots of cassis, graphite, smoked tobacco, and damp earth define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a layered, concentrated mouthfeel, building tannins, and incredible length on the finish. It’s going to evolve for 30 to 40 years – and be drinkable for just about all of it!

Intensely fragrant nose, really quite perfumed and floral and expressive. Supple and alive, though quite highly charged too – fruit is ripe but the tannins are a little compact so you get a push-pull of flavour and texture. Good persistence from start to finish with nice attention to detail and I like the quite impactful tannins giving the structure which takes over the fruity fun a little at this point. Feels tight and young still but still with great promise. (GH)

Notes

96 points Yohan Castaing writes in Decanter: "The 2014 vintage from Château Ducru-Beaucaillou stands out for its very singular nose of Cabernet-Sauvignon with peppery notes, blackcurrant, green bell pepper, graphite and blueberry with aeration. This is not the most structured wine of this vertical tasting, but it remains a textbook St-Julien in the context of the vintage, as it has the upright style, tension, and freshness, as well as an airborne finish. Very elegant wine that possesses the sappy palate of modern Ducru-Beaucaillou and both elegance and finesse." (05/2021) 95+ points Antonio Galloni writes in Vinous: "One of the more powerful wines for the year, the 2014 Ducru-Beaucaillou surprises with its sheer concentration. A blast of dark cherry, crème de cassis, mocha, spice and chocolate makes a strong opening statement. Super-ripe, voluptuous and opulent, the wine possesses off-the-charts depth and richness. Ducru remains the most opulent and flamboyant of the 2014 Saint-Juliens. While some 2014s have faded a bit over the last two years, Ducru has barely budged. I imagine it will be many years before the 2014 starts drinking well. Proprietor Bruno Borie gave it 18 months in 100 % new French oak." (02/2017)
