Pierre-Yves Colin's 2015 Saint-Aubin Le Banc is really starting to show well, offering up a lovely bouquet of crisp Anjou pear, citrus oil, freshly baked bread and subtle hints of toasted nuts. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and incisive, it's beautifully vibrant even in this warm vintage, with chalky structuring extract, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. On release, this represented terrific value and I'm happy to have the better part of a case left in my cellar. (WK)

A sleek, refined white, offering lemon, white peach and floral aromas and flavors. Balanced, with vibrant acidity focusing the long, chalk-tinged finish. (BS)

Smoky white orchard fruit aromas, and in particular pear, combine with floral and citrus zest precede the very round and rich flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel while offering a slightly drier and more complex finale. Once again, this should be approachable on the early side. Drink: 2019+

Pale bright yellow. Pear drop and menthol on the ripe but lively nose. Saint-Aubin in a rather opulent style, but with a slightly aggressive quality to its menthol and mineral flavors. Densely packed but a bit disjointed today, with higher acidity than most of Colin's other 2015 whites. (ST)

Notes

After working as the winemaker at his father's domaine, Pierre-Yves Colin began his own in 2005 to much acclaim. As Neal Martin expounds in the Wine Advocate, "Pierre-Yves’s wines have become highly sought-after in recent vintages and in many ways it is a totem of Burgundy’s move towards more micro-négoçiant set-ups. Where once the mantra was that you have to own your own vines, nowadays wines such as Pierre-Yves debunk that theory, which is good news because the salient fact is that some of the most talented winemakers can no longer afford the escalating land prices. One other piece of good news of PYCM lovers is that he has expanded his range with some fermage agreements courtesy of his aunt... It is interesting to muse upon the fact that both Pierre-Yves and his brothers Damien and Joseph at Domaine Marc Colin, are producing some of the best wines in Côte de Beaune. I never asked how competitive they are, but that drive towards quality is a blessing to all us wine-lovers." (12/2014)
