Amrut has never been content to simply replicate the great whisky traditions of Scotland, and this second release of their Single Malt Rye proves once again why the Bengaluru distillery remains one of the most compelling names in world whisky. Made from 100% malted rye sourced from Europe and aged in new American oak barrels, this is a fascinating hybrid of categories: the structure and cereal depth of malt whisky, the spice and snap of rye, and the concentrated richness that comes from Amrut’s warm, high-altitude maturation. Bottled at a robust 50%, it offers an expressive nose of toasted grain, rye bread, roasted nuts, coffee bean, and dark crusty bread. The palate is broad and layered, with caramel popcorn, apple, toffee, dark chocolate, black tea, and a persistent line of rye spice running through the center. New oak gives the whisky weight and polish without flattening its energy, and the finish carries on with sweet spice, toasted bread, and a warming, slightly tannic grip. A Gold medal winner at the 2024 Whiskies of the World Awards and rated 92 points by Whisky Advocate, this is Amrut at its most inventive, distinctive, and globally relevant.
