Reviewed January 2016
The 2012 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is dark, voluptuous and immediate. A burst of sweet red plums, smoke, graphite, licorice and tobacco hits the palate. The tannins are sweet but also energetic. Extroverted in style, the 2012 also has enough depth and overall density to drink well for another decade or so. Rose petal, iron and white pepper add the final shades of nuance. Here in its first vintage, Les Griffons is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. (AG)

The equivalent of an alternative second wine from Château Pichon Baron (with Les Tourelles), Les Griffons is named after the statues of griffins that are in the chateau's courtyard. This is a structured wine, firmly tannic while already showing plenty of black currant fruitiness. Equal measures of Merlot and Cabernet balance the wine and give depth of flavor. (RV)

A wine I haven’t tasted before, the 2012 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Soft, luxuriously fruity, and deep ruby/purple-colored, this is a seductive, lush, in-your-face style of Pauillac to drink over the next 7-10 years. (RP)

Features a bold minty note, along with friendly plum and blackberry fruit accents, backed by a rounded, open-knit and anise-lined finish. (JM, Web-2015)

A second wine like no other and somehow involved in mystery. Much closer in style to the Grand vin than the other wine, Les Tourelles de Longueville, and coming from the same vineyards, made with the exactly same care as the Baron itself. It has the elegance of the finest Cabernet from Pauillac, which makes the majority of the assemblage, along with an also high quality Merlot. It is hard to say why this is a second wine and not just added to the grand vin... Excellent!
