I underrated the 2015 Rauzan-Ségla on release. It’s a big, rich, incredibly sexy wine that’s certainly in the same ballpark as the 2016 (and 2018). Full-bodied, ripe, and concentrated, it has a wonderfully expansive, layered texture as well as an incredible sense of balance. Lots of cassis, leafy herbs, flowery incense, and tobacco notes all emerge from this beauty, which offers sweet tannins as well as a huge finish. This is magical stuff that’s going to keep for three decades or more.

Rauzan Ségla fully in its stride, fragrant peony and crushed rose petals that expand through the palate, just such a great expression of Cabernet at the 10 year point, coupled with a Margaux appellation signature, when the muscles and tannins turn toned and finessed, and the cassis fruit and raspberry leaf remain fragrant and juicy. Love it. 65% new oak, harvest September 10 to October 9, Nicolas Audebert just arrived from Cheval des Andes in this vintage.

Extremely aromatic with dried flowers, perfumed and sandalwood and blackcurrants. Full body, ultra-fine tannins, a gorgeous core of ripe fruit and blackcurrants and blueberries. Racy and very long. So impressive. This needs four or five years to come around but already so fine.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Rauzan-Ségla offers up an expressive nose of baked blackberries, kirsch, warm cassis and baked plums with hints of cigar box and tilled soil. Full-bodied, rich and expansive in the mouth, it has layer upon layer of bold red and black fruit preserves with earthy accents and a velvety texture, finishing long and lively. (LPB)

Just like their sister property, Canon, 2015 was a monumental vintage for Rauzan-Ségla—one that capitalized on decades of investment in both vineyard and cellar to establish a new standard at the estate. It doesn’t hurt that 2015 is also a benchmark vintage for the Margaux appellation—something I’d call an under-the-radar secret if we hadn’t been broadcasting it so loudly for the past decade. Combine that vintage character with the fact that Rauzan-Ségla may well be the second most accomplished wine of Margaux’s 2015s (with a respectful nod to the First Growth in the neighborhood), and our current pricing—ten years on—is about as good as it gets. While I tend to think of Château Margaux as elegance personified and Palmer as a regal powerhouse, Rauzan-Ségla usually finds the middle ground: elegant but bold, Cabernet leading the charge, with refinement always at its core. This 2015 speaks beautifully to that profile, keeping that floral, dark-fruited signature fully intact. As Neal Martin wrote in his 10-year retrospective earlier this year, 2015 Rauzan-Ségla “probably represents one of the best values on the Left Bank.” I’ve been banging that drum for a while now, but it’s nice to hear it again. Pair that with a perfect-provenance parcel direct from Bordeaux, and you’ve got Margaux magic for a song.

Notes

96 points Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "The 2015 Rauzan-Ségla is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel. Rich, sumptuous and super-intense, the 2015 envelops the palate. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, licorice, leather, tobacco and menthol are all given an extra kick of richness in a dramatic, exceptionally beautiful Rauzan-Ségla that clearly swings for the fences. Although quite concentrated and sumptuous, the 2015 also retains considerable nuance. Readers lucky enough to own the 2015 can look forward to several decades of fine drinking. This is terrific effort from estate manager Nicolas Audebert, who wasted no time in sending a strong message about his ambitions in his first full-time vintage at Rauzan-Ségla. The 2015 is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc." (02/2018)
