Int'l Wine Review

Reviewed March 2016
The 2006 Grand Millésime is a simply riveting Champagne which is composed of 56% Pinot Noir sourced from vineyards in Ambonnay, Avenay, Aÿ-Champagne, Chignyles-Roses ans Louvois along with 44% Chardonnay from Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Trépail and Vertus. This elegant styled Champagne instantly opens with striking aromas of fresh sliced apples, poached pear, lemon zest, white floral, toasted hazelnut and oyster shells all talking shape beautifully in the glass. This continues to impress with remarkable balance and complexity, while showing wonderful intensity as it enters the precise finish, which is laced with streaks of saline infused minerals. While the 2006 is already extremely appealing it should also continue to drink well for years to come. (JD)

This is a dry style of wine, with great acidity and a tightly wrought texture. As with many Gosset Champagnes, this wine has had no malolactic fermentation, enhancing the freshness and crispness as well as the structure. Full of lemon zest, crisp grapefruit and delicious acidity, it will still age for many years. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

The 2006 Gosset “Grande Millésime” is comprised of a blend of fifty-six percent pinot noir and forty-four percent chardonnay. The wine spent eight years aging on its fine lees prior to disgorgement and was finished off with a dosage of six grams per liter. The wine offers up a fine and vibrant bouquet of apple, a touch of peach, warm bread, beautiful minerality, gentle smokiness, just a whisper of fresh nutmeg and a topnote of white lilies. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and still quite racy in personality, with a lovey core, refined mousse, crisp acids and excellent focus and grip on the long and complex finish. This is drinking very well today, but it is still climbing and will be even better with a bit more time in the cellar. A lovely vintage of this fine cuvée.

Gosset's 2006 Grand Millésime Brut is still on the market, and the wine is very open and expressive by the house's standards, bursting from the glass with notes of crisp but sun-kissed yellow orchard fruit, pear, clear honey and warm biscuits. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and creamy, with a fleshy, generous profile that's balanced by brisk acids and enlivened by a delicate pinpoint mousse, concluding with a subtly chalky finish. Notes

94 points Stephan Reinhardt for Wine Advocate: "From an excellent vintage, especially for Pinot Noir, Gosset's golden-yellow 2006 Grand Millésime Brut (which blends 56% Pinot Noir with 44% Chardonnay and was disgorged after eight years on the lees) displays a deep, rich and fresh, very mineral bouquet. This is followed by a full-bodied, very complex and persistent palate with purity, finesse and great expression. This is a mouthful of a straightforward, well-structured and refreshing millésime with a long and pure, salty and stringent finish. This 2006 combines richness with purity, elegance with complexity, and finesse with a serious expression and length. A great Champagne indeed." (06/2016)
