Reviewed October 2016The golden-yellow colored 2013 Anjou Ephata comes from 60-year-old vines grown on slate soils. Fermented with natural yeasts in cuvees and aged for 12 months in 140-liter clay amphorae, and another six months in cask, this is a deep, intensely aromatic, very and elegant Chenin Blanc; it has a delicate mineral (crushed stones) flavor on the nose. Full-bodied and densely woven, yet pure and finesse-full, this is a highly elegant and persistently mineral Chenin Blanc with a great structure and a mouthwatering, fresh finish. The aftertaste is really long and complex, and there is no alcohol overpowering it (the wine has moderate 13%). In fact, the aftertaste indicates a perfect mix of stimulating minerals and perfectly ripe fruits. This is an impressive Chenin Blanc with a remarkable finesse and it can compete with top Burgundies. An old-vine wine that was aged in clay amphoras, this is a ripe, honeyed, gently oxidized wine. This aging gives a lift to the pineapple and green plum fruit flavors that are shot through with acidity. It's a rich wine both from the oxidation and from the really ripe fruits. (RV)
