The U.S.-released Dark Batch is, if not the same whisky as the Canadian-released Dark Horse (both from Alberta Distillers), a very close cousin. It is dark; it’s 1% sherry, which brings the intense dried fruit notes along with cedar and a bright, pleasantly musky note. More Canadians should break the 80 proof barrier: this booms into the mouth, throwing wood, cereal, fruit, and sunshine around. Good to sip, bold in a cocktail, holds its own on ice, nice price. This is some wonky old school stuff. I imagine this is what whisky USED to be like back in the day. Distillers in Canada (and the states for that matter) are well within their rights to use flavor additives to enhance their Rye Whiskies before bottling without listing the ingredients on the label. Purist are convulsing around the country, but if it makes it taste better and it's not poisonous than why the hell not. I used to harp on Cognac for using additives, but then I found out that great cognac uses additives (particularly old under-proof brandy called petites eaux or faibles) because it's freaking delicious. Nobody wants to talk about it because they're worried that their image will be tarnished. Alberta Dark doesn't beat around the bush. This is awesome rye whisky with a splash of sherry and it's delicious! Dark rye spice and nutty sherry notes work together to build a unique and inviting profile that will peak even the most grizzled whiskey drinkers interest.

The Dark Batch Alberta rye whiskey from Beam Suntory is here at last, utilizing stocks from the long-owned, but rarely-marketed-in-the-states whiskey from Alberta distillers. You like Whistle Pig? This whiskey comes from the same place. It's 6 year old pot still rye whiskey, aged in new oak like American whiskey, mixed with 12 year old whiskey aged in used barrels for a total of 91% Rye Whiskey, then blended with 8% Jim Beam Kentucky Bourbon. Sounds pretty interesting right? Now imagine adding a splash of sherry to the mix and you've got one of the most compelling new products on the market. For the price it's a no brainer. Bold, peppery, classic rye flavor with enough richness to sip neatly. Add some ice or mix into a Manhattan. You can't beat this for the price. The Canadian flood gates are opening and things are now really starting to get interesting.
