It’s unique to taste an XO that’s aged 25 years, made from a significant amount of Folle Blanche grape in the blend, and bottled at cask strength -- or brut de fût as the French say. Complex yet seamless. Summer-garden aromas of orange and honeysuckle lead to a deep, intense experience on the palate, a thrilling balance of fruit and minerality, and a long, dry finish. Bas-Armagnac, 42.4% abv. (JW)

Baron de Lustrac is a well respected small producer that has estates both in the Tenereze as well as Bas-Armagnac. They're generally focused on single varietal offerings, but it was the 25 year old XO that struck me as their most exceptional brandy for the price. These are old Armagnacs of at least 25 years old without the addition of water or coloring whatsoever and bottled right out of the cask. The result is of a purity and intensity not scene in the rest of the line up and at this price it could easily be a contender for best value in the whole region. The style is not ultra estery with tons of floral, fruit and spice aromas. Very balanced and very well put together.

Notes

Here's a 25-year-old Armagnac from a legendary house for less than $90. Oh, did we mention that it's also cask strength, or "Brut de Fût" as the French call it. After 25 years that means it's only 42.4%, but the concentration is evident. This is an elegant and approachable style from the big name in Magnan, but remains complex and authentic. An incredible value even compared to all the wonderful and competitively priced Armagnacs that we've brought in directly.
