Reviewed August 2012It had been some years since I last had this and I was pleased to be able to have it from someone who had purchased it on release from the American importer. An expressive, elegant and wonderfully layered nose of spice, mature fruit and even a whiff of sous bois complements the detailed and attractively rich flavors that possess equally good depth and stunning length. This bottle was drunk side by side with the Jayer-Gilles '93 Echézeaux and it was fascinating to compare the power and richness of the Jayer-Gilles with the more refined and lighter-styled Jayer. This beauty should continue to drink well for many years to come though there is no longer any reason to hold it further as it has arrived at its peak.

Tasted at Paulee in Beaune (gate-crashing at the end.) I admit, I did neck this straight from the bottle, but I did pour a little in the glass to revel in the aroma, although that rush of Pinot direct onto the tonsils did seem to illuminate this gorgeous wine. Blueberries, loganberry and a touch of violets on the beautifully defined, quite youthful nose. The palate is medium-bodied, silky smooth tannins, not particularly complex but very well balanced, with notes of raspberry coulis, wild strawberry, a hint of blueberry and iodine. Again, at fifteen-years of age it seems very youthful. A lovely Echezeaux. Drink now-2015+ Tasted November 2008.
