Balanced and delicious, this is rich, full in the mouth, packed with both white and citrus fruits and with secondary flavors of almonds, toast and baked bread. It is poised generously between the fresh and mature, making it very ready to drink now. (RV)

Vivid yellow. Intense aromas of Meyer lemon, pear skin, honeysuckle, toasty lees and iodine, with a bright mineral quality adding lift and focus. Rich yet lively and precise, offering an array of fresh citrus and orchard fruit flavors that fill out and deepen with air. Closes on a smoky note, with excellent clarity and length and building florality. I really like the marriage of power and vivacity here. (JR)

A finely meshed Champagne, with a creamy mousse and citrusy acidity framing the flavors of pastry dough, baked cherry, chopped almond and singed orange peel. The lingering finish is richly smoky. (AN)

I had last tasted the 2002 Lanson Brut Millésime a year ago and found the wine blossomed beautifully in the glass. One year further on had allowed it to more fully reach its apogee and the wine is now drinking with plenty of style and complexity. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a mélange of apple, gentle leesiness, a nice dollop of nuttiness, sourdough bread, classy soil nuances and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and focused, with plenty of mid-palate depth, bright acids, elegant mousse and a long, complex and wide open finish. I really like the combination here of the ripeness of 2002 and the non-malo spine that is the Lanson house style. As I failed to note last year, this is a blend of fifty-three percent pinot noir and forty-seven percent chardonnay and spent nine years aging sur latte prior to disgorgement. Fine juice. (Drink between 2016-2035)

This is serious vintage Champagne from one of historic houses in Reims. Lanson never allows their wines to go through malolactic fermentation, and this exceptionally young and fresh wine shows what a good call that can be when you have the patience to cellar your Champagne. The nose is full of high quality candied cherry from the top notch Pinot Noir that makes up half the blend and palate is full of Meyer lemon zing from the top notch Chardonnay that makes up the other. The finish is very long and chalky- I can't recommend this highly enough!

Notes

This Champagne is composed of 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay, both entirely from Grand Cru sites. Since Lanson never allows the wines to go through malo, this is a spectacularly fresh 13-year-old that has lots of flowery Chardonnay character, as the savory Pinot Noir side has yet to fully develop. This will be a spectacular bottle for the future if you can resist its ample charms right now.
