The amber spirit opens with a smoky aroma that's underpinned by vanilla and light floral notes. Pungent and medicinal in personality, with gobs of peat, tar, iodine, brine, and seaweed. These are all good things.in case you were wondering. A gentle vanilla sweetness tries to tame this savage beast, but it is no match. One of the most challenging-yet rewarding-whiskies in the entire world. Peaty. You'll smell the peat immediately, but more rewards await. Honey candy beats out the expected peat on the palate, and when the smoke clears out come red fruit and hard candy flavors, especially with a splash of water. The long, honeyed finish brings bread dough.

Poll the people of Islay regarding their favorite whisky to drink, I'll argue that this one would be in the running for top billing. The truth of the matter is that Laphroaig's CS offering remains one of the single most impressive regular releases on the market. Laphroaig is nothing if not consistent in terms of quality and this release is no slouch. Massively powerful aromas on nose are not actually totally dominated by iodine and peat, but instead lead by powerful vanilla and sweet oak. ON the palate is where the powerful spirit shows through. Briny and textural, it can be mistaken for no other. With water the sweet oak on the nose gives way to more ocean water, white pepper, and some industrial grade smoke. You should rely on this whisky as it will always deliver.

The Original Cask Strength 10 Year Old from Laphroig is the quintessential Islay powerhouse. This thick, oily, rich, super smokey, iodine bomb is exactly what you need on a stormy winter night. I keep mine by my lantern for when the power goes out!
