Reviewed December 2003The fruit for this cuvee comes primarily from the Ink Grade Vineyard made famous by Behrens and Hitchcock. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon and the rest cabernet franc and merlot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a fresh, lively perfume of blueberries, blackberries, flowers, lead pencil shavings, and earth. With excellent density and richness in addition to a long finish, it is a beautifully knit, primary but promising Cabernet.
Notes
The 2001 Serdonis is a classically-styled Cabernet Sauvignon from the rugged Ink Grade section of Howell Mountain. The Ink Grade Ranch originates from a steep slope at 2,100 feet altitude. Its 200-foot drop in elevation, rocky terraces and white moon-dust soils characterizes the southeastern-facing vineyard. The 2001 is the first vintage from Serdonis. It shows deep, concentrated flavors of dark cherry, tar, smoke and minerals, with a long, firm but ripe finish.
