My favorite Mills Vineyard offering to date, the 1988 is an amazing tour de force in Pinot Noir winemaking. The color is a deep plum/purple, and the bouquet offers up a spectacular aromatic profile of black fruits, gamy, roasted meats, underbrush, and flowers. Dense, full-bodied, opulently-textured, and remarkably sweet and pure, this extraordinary Pinot Noir will last another decade. It admirably demonstrates what the limestone soils of Calera’s Mt. Harlan vineyard can produce. A brilliant wine still in its adolescence. Wow! (RP)

Parker tasted this wine in 2002 at age 14 and called it “an amazing tour de force in Pinot Noir winemaking.” 20 years later this wine is still remarkably dense and powerful. Smoldering black fruits, bramble, black raspberry, oak spices, and rocky minerals. Perfect balance and poise.

Notes

Situated in the Gavilan Mountains just twenty-five miles east of the Monterey Bay, at an average elevation of 2,200 feet above sea level, Calera's Mount Harlan "Mills Vineyard" is among the highest and coolest sites in California. Calera farms these limestone soils organically, ferments using native yeasts with minimal racking, and bottles unfiltered to produce an intense, structured Pinot Noir with a real sense of place.
